Harbour Porpoise project, Grand Manan.,
2005
Harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) is a threatened species in Atlantic Canada because of incidental mortality by many fisheries especially herring. They are one of the most common marine mammals in the Bay of Fundy (especially from July to September.) In 1991, The Grand Manan Whale and Seabird Research Station in New Brunswick began the Harbor Porpoise Release Program (http://www.gmwsrs.org/release.htm) to work with local fishermen to safely release porpoises from their weirs without disrupting herring catches. They have successfully released more than 600 porpoises from local herring weirs.
